Coffee enemas are incorporated into cleansing and detox programs – for instance The Gerson Institute is well known for including coffee enemas in their treatment programs. The purpose of coffee enemas is to stimulate the liver to increase its detoxification of the blood and decrease the toxic load on the liver. This includes removing a variety of toxins and free radicals from the bloodstream. They assist the liver so as not to overburden an already sluggish and toxic liver.
In a colonic hydrotherapy treatment, the coffee solution is placed in the implant bottle. The solution is released into the lower part of the descending colon where it is held for 20 minutes. When a litre of coffee solution is introduced into the colon it passes through the colon wall into the system of blood vessels that take blood from the intestines to the liver, the portal system, as opposed to passing through the whole digestive system. The compounds in coffee are absorbed by the hemorrhoidal and mesenteric veins that route to the liver. The compounds which include caffeine, theobromine and theophylline dilate the blood vessels, bile ducts and relax smooth muscles, increasing the flow of bile. The coffee causes the bile ducts to dilate so that more toxins can be excreted through bile into the intestines for exit out of the body. At the same time the theophylline and theobromine in the coffee cause dilation of the blood vessels, allowing more blood to pass through the system for filtering by the liver.
